Do Not Disturb: Girls, Bedrooms, and “Safe Space”

remi_new5a
A “safe space” is a place where anyone can express themselves comfortably and relax, without fear or self- consciousness. For many teenage girls, that “safe space” is their bedroom.  Somewhere they can listen to music, draw, write, and express themselves in whatever ways they chose. Bedrooms are so important because they give teen girls a place to find themselves and grow as people. They foster a sense of security that girls are not always given outside of their bedrooms. For this series, I shot five girls from Montclair, NJ (where I’m from) in their bedrooms and asked them to tell me about the meaning behind their safe spaces.

Meena: My favorite part of my bedroom would probably be my bed since I use it for just about anything.

Meena: My room is a safe space because it helps keep me away from negative vibes from family members. It let’s me be at peace with myself while I play music.

Remi: What is your favorite part of your bedroom?

Chyna: My favorite part of my bedroom is my closet mirror because it gives off a reflection of everything in my room that defines me. It’s also a reminder because whenever I’m feeling down, I go into my room and look in my mirror.

Remi: Why is your bedroom a safe space?

Chyna: I’m really protective of my room and my belongings so no one goes in my room but me. My room is my safe space specifically because I cannot be judged if I have no one to be judged by. My room is where I can be me and I love that about it.

Remi: What is your favorite part of your bedroom?

Sofia: My bed is definitely my favorite part of my room just cause I can snuggle, read, watch TV, and sleep all in one place.

Sofia: My room is a safe space because it’s a place where I can be 100% myself without feeling any judgment. It’s my place to be freely creative.

Remi: Why is your bedroom a safe space?

Kristen: My room is isolated from my whole house on a separate floor, so that makes it feel really safe. It’s my own little quiet space.

SIMONE.
remi_new5aRemi: What is your favorite part of your bedroom?

Simone: My favorite part of my bedroom is the wallpaper. Aside from irony, it’s floral and multi-colored, so I can kind of get away with having whatever-colored anything in my room.  And since my parents will inevitably have to take it down before they sell, they’ve given me full leeway to draw and paste away on the wallpaper. It’s been my teenage art project.
remi_new4Remi: Why is your bedroom a safe space?

Simone: My room is a safe space because its contents were and continue to be curated by me and only me. Also, a sick elderly man used to sleep in this room, so the old owner installed a panic button on the wall that alerts 911 when you press it. That also makes me feel really safe.
