Want to get everything done and keep your cool at the same time? It’s TOTALLY normal to have moments where you feel completely overwhelmed. But, no matter what is going on in our lives, there are some tricks to staying positive and keeping calm. Here are just a few of our favorites:
Eat healthfully, drink enough water, and exercise. It’s easy to list the beauty benefits of a healthy diet and exercise, but the truth is that eating nutritious foods, keeping yourself hydrated, and exercising do A LOT to support your happiness, energy, and focus. Skimp too much in any one area, and you’ll be moodier than you want to be. A parent or healthcare provider can give you specific nutrition and fitness tips (everyone’s different!), but staying away from processed sugars – like those found in candy and sodas – adding more green veggies into your diet, and walking a little more can make a difference.
Get your zzzzzz’s. With so much going on, it can be temping to stay up later, whether you’re finishing an assignment or texting with friends. But, the time you take to rest can actually help you work more productively and manage your to-do list more efficiently. Sleep is also essential for your overall physical and emotional health. If you feel like you’re not sleeping enough, ask a school counselor for some tips on time-management.
Do things that make you feel confident. Spend time on your strengths. Accomplishing things you feel good about contributes to your self-esteem and your happiness in the long-term. Are you a musician? Learn a new song. Into community service? Spend some extra time volunteering.
Write in a journal. Researchers have found that writing in a journal can be really relaxing. A journal is a great place to store negative thoughts that you don’t need crowding your head, and keeping list of things you’re grateful for can help program your mind to look for the positive aspects of life. Put a pen to paper, write whatever you want, and see how you feel afterwards.
Try to focus on the positive. It’s normal to have negative thoughts and moments where you feel down, sad, frustrated, or hopeless. No one is happy all the time. If you start to spiral, one way to shift your attitude in a positive direction is to notice negative thoughts when you are having them, and work to look at them from another perspective and think about solutions. For example, if you get a grade you don’t like on a test, you can dwell, feeling badly about what you did wrong, or you can start planning your strategy to do better next time.
Surround yourself with people who love and accept you. Whenever you have a choice, spend time with people who make you feel optimistic, and uplifted. And definitely turn to someone if this list of happiness strategies doesn’t seem to be helping.
